Microvascular Reconstructive Fellowship

The University of Utah Microvascular Reconstructive Fellowship is a large-volume training program designed for board eligible/board certified graduates of ACGME certified plastic surgery residencies who wish to gain additional experience in the diagnosis and surgical management of breast reconstruction patients. The surgeons in the University of Utah breast reconstruction program provide a broad experience in breast reconstruction.

Our fellowship program is designed to give you the skills and knowledge to advance your career in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Each fellow experiences a variety of surgical cases, providing a firm foundation for future practice. Learn more below!

    This microvascular reconstructive fellowship is based on a clinical referral base from five states. This fellowship is a University of Utah GME approved program.

    This fellowship will provide experience with breast, head and neck, and extremity microsurgery for traumatic and oncologic defects. Fellows will spend nine months with the plastic surgery microsurgery team and three months on a busy head and neck reconstruction service.

    Clinical activity is on a supervised basis. Candidates for the fellowship will be eligible for a full Utah state license and will have faculty privileges. Active participation in ongoing clinical outcome studies or other research is expected. Presentation of original research at a national meeting is supported and expected.

    As acting instructor at the University of Utah School of Medicine, the participant will be involved in the clinical supervision and teaching of medical students and plastic surgery residents. Fellows will be required to take call three nights per month. 

    Individuals in the program will have well-developed Plastic Surgery skills and be familiar with the full range of plastic surgery procedures. Attendance is also expected at the weekly University of Utah Plastic Surgery Divisional Grand Rounds.

    Fellows should expect the following case volume through the year: 

    • Free flaps: 90
    • Complex Non-Microsurgical Reconstruction: 50
    • Nerve Repairs: 10
    • Replants: 10
    • Head and Neck: 25
    • Breast Implant Reconstruction: 100
    • Upper Extremity: 10
    • Autologous Tissue Breast Reconstruction: 70
    • Truck: 25
